CHAPTER EIGHTEEN

Win happily stepped out of the Rolls Royce in front of Roderick Chambers’ cottage, along with Elisabeth, Josephine, and Andrew. Before they reached the front doorway, it flew open, and Roderick greeted them with outstretched arms.

“Ah, you’ve returned. I take it the journey was all you hoped it would be. Am I now welcoming a new son and daughter into the family?” he enquired.

“Indeed, you are, sir,” answered Win. "We tied the knot in a charming double ceremony in the old Gretna Church. The vicar was a delightful gentleman. We stayed at a quaint inn and drove back today. We’ve already been to Winthrop Manor, and our reception was precisely what we expected it would be. It seems Elisabeth’s and my actions have put a blight on the distinguished family name.” He laughed heartily. “Frankly, I think some new blood is exactly what is needed on the family tree.”

“Do come inside. I want to hear all about your adventure,” said Roderick.

Everyone entered the cottage and made themselves comfortable in the parlour. Roderick served refreshments, and they began to converse.

“Oh, I am truly sorry to learn of your parents' reaction. I had hoped they would accept your choices and welcome you. Well, no matter. I happen to be delighted, and not because of your heritage,” Roderick replied. “It’s so obviously apparent that great love exists here. I have no doubt whatsoever that you’ll all be extremely happy. Damn this wretched war. I’m afraid it may throw a wrench into the immediate future.”

“Yes," Win replied. "Andrew and I must immediately look into what lies ahead for us.“

“I know a recruitment office has been established in Winthrop-on-Hart,” said Roderick. “I should think they can give you all the information you need.”

“Yes. Absolutely. I’m glad we won’t have to travel to London. We have many things to discuss. If Andrew and I have to go for military training immediately, appropriate arrangements need to be thought out for our wives.”

“Win, you’ve no need for concern on that score. They can stay here with me for a long as necessary.”

Win smiled. “That’s good of you, Roderick. Nonetheless, I don’t like the idea of their living with you for a long, long time. I know everyone is saying this conflict will be over by Christmas, but I’m not at all certain I believe that. I know Josephine has always dreamed of an English cottage in the country with a luscious garden adorning the front.” He turned to his wife. “Darling, how would you like it if we put plans into motion to build your dream cottage?”

“Win, you know I’d adore such a thing. Uncle, you once said I might have a parcel of your land to build on. Would that really be possible?”

“Absolutely. We’ll take a ride over the land tomorrow. I have a specific spot in mind.”

“Elisabeth, how would you feel about sharing that sort of accommodation with me if Andrew and Win are gone a long time?” Josephine asked her sister-in-law.

“I would love it. I’ve always lived in the country.
